A woodworking jig is a type of tool that all serious woodworkers must have. Basically, a jig is anything you can use to hold the piece you are working on in place. One use of a jig is to let you make precise cuts on a consistent basis. In this way, the jig functions as a template that lets you work more efficiently. It is also great to use for repetitive tasks. A woodworking jib can be a substitution for an extra pair of hands, which lets you work on more complicated projects on your own.

Whatever project you undertake in your woodworking shop, you will most likely find a jig to make that project easier. Many sites such as Amazon or eBay carry many different types of jigs that are available for sale. There are so many types that they would fill a book. But if you consider the tool you will be using with the jig, that will help you narrow down what kind you need.

Just on the off chance that your woodworking needs require a jig that no one has thought of yet, there is nothing stopping you from inventing one yourself. Keep in mind what you do in your shop and in what way it could become easier. There are some jigs that you might keep forever and use all the time. In these cases, it may be in your best interests to buy a quality premade jig. If it is something that you may use once in awhile or just one time for a special project, and then put away somewhere, it may be useful to just try building your own. The time you invest in creating your own jig can provide a huge payoff in the time saved as well as fewer materials that you have to throw out due to cutting improperly.

Rumors have been around for quite some time that Acer might be in the works of putting out an Android based mobile phone. Well, the rumors are correct and it is starting to look like this mobile Smartphone might be one of the best on the market. The Acer version of the Smartphone will end up using the first ever Qualcomm Snapdragon processor which means this little phone isn’t just smart but very powerful with a processor clock speed of 1GHz. There’s no way you can say this phone is going to be sluggish and weak powered with the Snapdragon processor in it.

The new A1 Liquid mobile Smartphone has not yet been released and, in reality, there isn’t even a release date set for it as of yet. In fact, Acer hasn’t even determined when or where it will be introduced but with its accelerated 3G graphics, 5 mega pixel camera, and the added bonus of the social networking apps that you can get for it already the A1 Liquid by Acer might just be the Smartphone of all Smartphone’s. The ability to use the processor at the highest possible speed is something that no other Smartphone is capable of doing as of yet. This ability is something that Acer is truly trying to get on the market as fast as possible trying to shut out the competitors before they get their higher processors on the market. If they are able to make this happen, it will definitely revolutionize the way Smartphone’s are being used. With such processing power available it will only be a matter of months before you start seeing every science fiction reader’s dream of personal hand held computers like the ones that have been thought up for all those great old Sci-Fi movies and television shows.

Most corporations today like to reward their employees with gifts to celebrate different occasions. These may include winning a huge account, or an anniversary, or even a birthday. They may also present them with going away or retirement gifts. These types of gifts need to be made from durable material so that they will be with the recipient for a very long time. These gifts will be remembered for a quite some time, particularly if they are made from wood.

Some ideas for wooden gifts are listed below:

A wooden Jewelry Box is something nearly all women will love. Add a more masculine touch to it and men will appreciate it, too. This offers a chance to become a bit more organized by having a place for jewelry, chains, cuff links, watches, buttons, and even a place to stash keys when you’re home for the day.

For the male employees a wooden Cigar Box can be the perfect gift for any age. It does not have to only hold cigars. It can be used to store any small thing of value.

Something a little different is the wooden Pen Box. Even in this age of computers, people still use pens to write with. Some people just like collecting them. This box will give them a place to store their pens and have them handy at the same time.

Wooden Music Boxes bring smiles all around when presented. These can be found in many styles and play all different types of music.

Who doesn’t love candles? Wooden Candle Holders are perfect as seasonal gifts as well as every occasion ones. They are especially loved if they come with some scented candles.

Any of the above are great ideas for wooden gifts to employees. However, you can make them even more special by personalizing them with the employee’s name or initials and the date of the occasion.

For those of you who engage in needlecrafts of any kind, presented below are some tips that just may make your life a bit easier. There is something here for everyone no matter what sort of needlecrafts you do.

Use a bar of soap to stick your needles and pins into. It helps to lubricate them.

If you have trouble threading a needle, use some hairspray on the end of the thread. It causes the thread to stiffen and will go right through the eye of the needle.

When you accidently knock over a container of pins and needles, don’t panic. Get a magnet of some sort and use it to attract the pins and needles. This can even be a kitchen magnet plucked quickly from the refrigerator.

To stiffen crochet projects mix white glue and water together. Soak the project in this mixture and squeeze out any excess. Stretch it into the right shape and pin it to a piece of Styrofoam. Let it sit and dry for 24 hours.

Use small plastic baggies to store small items such as snaps and buttons. You won’t lose them and your sewing basket will stay neat and sorted.

You can use a small dot of clear nail polish on the thread ends on the back of your cross stitch projects and they will not come undone.

Do not use compressed air near your sewing machine. It will only make the lint problem worse. Clean it with a vacuum or rub some sewing machine oil on your brush and brush it out.

Thread several bobbins with different colors and keep them on hand in your sewing box. You’ll be ready for any job.

Before you begin sewing, wash newly purchased material. You need to know if the size will shrink or if colors will fade.

When you are doing a cross stitch project a little at a time, use a baggie to store all the thread and the pattern. It keeps everything together and is quite portable.

A couple of handy storage ideas are travelling tooth brush holders for crochet hooks and old medicine bottles with child proof lids for cross stitch or sewing needles.

Children take such a pleasure in receiving Valentines every year from their friends. It can be difficult for them to transport those cards and candy from school to home without losing them. The Valentine boxes that are made in class can be rather cumbersome to manage. That’s why this basket, something that can be made cheaply and easily, is the perfect solution.

The basket’s design can lay flat down on a table or desk, or hang from the handle. It expands with Valentine cards and candy as they are put in. Students love this basket and the fact that they made it.

To make the basket you will need the following:

2 sheets of construction paper, 9 x 12 size;

1 12 inch strip of ribbon or construction paper;

A Pattern for cutting the lines;

Scissors;

Staples;

Glue stick.

To make the curve on top of the heart, first create the pattern. Draw 3 lines lengthwise on paper. These lines need to be 9 inches long. Include a curve to cut off the corners.

The next thing you need to do is copy this pattern onto the 9 x 12 piece of construction paper in contrasting colors of Valentine’s Day. These are pastel pink, red, and white. You can also use lavender and hot pink.

Take 4 sheets of construction paper in contrasting colors. Cut the lines and rounded corners. There are now 4 strips on the papers. Take the strips and weave them under and over. This creates the woven basket front. When this is completed, it should resemble the shape of a heart.

Repeat this process with 2 more sheets of construction paper. The 2nd weaving is the back of the heart basket.

Something that all people who avidly crochet will agree on is the importance of choosing just the right crochet hook for both the project and comfort. Most crochet patterns will come with instructions that include suggestions for the size of hook needed for the best outcome of the project. They range in size from 2 to 16 mm but there are different systems for determining size. These exist between the U.S. and Britain as well as between different manufacturers. You need to take care when selecting your crochet hooks as some systems use the lowest size to name the larger hooks and others use the lowest size to show the smaller hooks.

Typically, it is easy to figure out what the gauge of your hook should be and just what sort of yarn style you will need. Even if you don’t have specific instructions, a seasoned crocheter can usually look at the project and figure out what they need to accomplish it. In addition, many people make up their own patterns as they go so they will know ahead of time what sort of crochet hooks they need.

Different crochet hooks are available in many styles and materials. These include double point needles that are made from materials such as Rosewood, Bamboo, and Ebony. Others are made from colored clear, and glass like plastic hooks.

In a crochet hook, the hook part is designed to appear as it does. There are curves that are created to help you crochet smoothly. Most people use the wooden single crochet hooks as a collector’s item rather than anything else these days. These decorative hooks are quite beautiful to look at. The inline hook is made to have the hook end perfectly in line with the shaft, while the hook on the end of the shaft is flatter.

The thing to remember in the beginning is that it is perfectly fine to experiment with many hooks to find the one that works best for you personally. In fact, this experimentation is encouraged.

Yarn is created from a number of plies, one ply being a single spun yarn. These yarn plies are twisted together in the opposite direction to create a thicker yarn. The thickness will help you know what size crochet hook you should use when making something with that particular yarn. The thicker the yarn, the larger the hook should be.

One of the most well known yarn manufacturers is Lion Brand Yarn. Formed in 1878, it started its operation in New York and has been a leader when it comes to supplying quality yarn ever since. Even today, Lion Brand Yarn is one of the preferred crochet yarns.

Yarn is available in many types and sizes. Various yarn weights are named to help differentiate the weights. These include lace, sock, fingering, sport, worsted, double-knit or DK, bulky and super bulky. These names are more for descriptive purposes than anything else, as Fiber artists do not agree on where one type of yarn ends and the next one begins.

Depending on the project you are working on, you may want cotton yarn, hemp yarn, or the very popular Alpaca. The Alpaca yarn is made from animal fur and is the most commonly used of this type. It is available in each yarn weight from the very thin lace or fingering size up to bulky. However, these animal fiber yarns may be itchy and cause allergic reactions. This makes them unsafe to use in crocheting items worn against the skin or for people who have sensitive skin and allergies. This group includes newborns.

An excellent way to keep your yarn from becoming tangled is to use an empty plastic coffee container. Cut a hole in the top and melt the edges of the hole using a lighter or match. This will smooth out the edges and keep the yarn from snagging. Store your yarn inside and simply pull the strand up through the hole in the lid. This can be particularly helpful if you have more than one project going on at once. You can also use tape or labels on the container to write the name of the project.

The line of Debbie Bliss knitting wool includes Alpaca Silk yarn. This is an Alpaca yarn that is very soft that also has silk incorporated into it. This yarn has been known to turn out some very beautiful baby outfits as well as sweaters for adults.
Characteristics of garments made from Debbie Bliss knitting wool include being stretchable, resilient, and extra soft. This amazing yarn needs to be carefully looked after. Because the wool is so stretchy, it is likely to shrink. Since it is not possible to stretch wool once it shrinks, the best thing to do is learn how to take care of it so it does not shrink or how to recycle wool that has shrunk.
To take care of your garments made with Debbie Bliss knitting wool is not that difficult.

First of all, if you follow the basic washing directions on the label, you are already halfway there. The label will tell you if the garment is washable, or if it needs dry cleaning only, or if hand washing is possible. Nearly every Debbie Bliss knitting wool garment is machine washable.

Always turn your Silky Wool garment inside out before washing.

Clean the garment carefully on a regular basis.

For washable garments, always use lukewarm water and mild detergents. Never use household bleach with sodium hypochlorite.

Add a teaspoon of vinegar to the last rinse. This will revitalize the wool and the silk.

Never wring or twist a wet wool garment. When a wool garment is wet, it loses a quarter of its strength. Simply squeeze it gently to get out some of the water and just let it dry naturally. If you want to get out more water, just roll it up in a towel and squeeze.

The first step to making Pandora glass beads is to ready your workspace. This needs to be located in a well ventilated area with no clutter or flammable material. You will need a heat resistant work surface such as a metal table or work bench. When you have this sorted, set up a MAPP gas bottle and torch head. Using the hose clamp, table clamp, and L bracket, fasten it into place. Glass rods and other tools you may be using should be set out along with the fire extinguisher.

Now you are ready to get the bead release clay ready to use. Stir it and add some water if needed to get a smooth consistency. Using the bead release clay, coat about 1 inch of both tips of each mandrel. Next, dip each mandrel into the clay leaving a thin and even coat. Set them aside to dry for about an hour.

Take your torch and light it with the gas. You will need to fix the amount of oxygen so that it offers a stable flame. Put a glass rod into the flame slowly. This will heat it while you are moving it nearer the tip of the flame’s inside cone.

Put the mandrel in behind the glass. Spin and heat it. The mandrel has to be hot and the glass has to be molten if they are going to adhere correctly to each other.

The mandrel can now be touched with the molten glass rod tip. Spinning the mandrel, the melted glass wraps around it. Keep spinning while melting the glass on the mandrel to make a round bead, or you can add more glass and keep melting. The parts of the bead must be heated slowly. To smooth out any bumps, heat for a longer period of time. Use your creativity to come up with colors and new glass forms.

Take the bead away from the hotter part of the flame slowly when you are finished making your bead. Keep heating the glass evenly while gradually taking it from the flame. Wrap your new bead in a fiber blanket immediately and let cool for 2 hours. When fully cooled, dip bead and mandrel into water to separate them.

Everyone has some creative talent or ability. Whether it is music, art, cooking, writing, or anything else that turns out a thing of beauty, everyone possesses some form of creativity. This is true even of small children. Many times it is through craft time that their abilities shine through and you will know what needs to be cultivated and nourished in them to develop these abilities.

Home crafts is one way of not only entertaining children but it helps to see where their interests and abilities are as well as what they are actually capable of doing. Something to keep in mind is their ages and their interests. Even toddlers can make things if you have the right idea and supplies. Depending on their ages and maturity, it is possible to let them cut out shapes and pictures with safety scissors as long as they are heavily supervised.

A wonderful craft project for the home is creating homemade greeting cards. All this takes is some crayons, construction paper or card stock, and some inspiration. Sit the children down at a table that is comfortable for them and let them use their imagination with the supplies you have given them. Just tell them they will be making whatever kind of greeting card fits the occasion and let them create.

Another simple craft project can be letting them make their very own scrapbook. This can be done by letting them choose pictures from colorful newspaper flyers, catalogs, and magazines and then cutting them out. Once the pictures have been collected, help younger children install the pictures in a magnetic photo album. These are relatively inexpensive and are quite durable. Kids love it when they show off the book that THEY made.

Something that is really fun for kids is making crafts with their friends. Maybe you can plan a craft day and invite some other children over to spend the afternoon making crafts. They will go home feeling quite proud of themselves.
